Education
While “public schools” are the purview of the School Board, “education” must be a project that all elected leaders have near the heart of their work. Nothing is a better predictor of future success in a City than the quality of its education - and Portland is poised to be an even greater education center for the region. Our K-12 system is strong, and getting better - but education encompasses so much more. With USM, UNE, SMCC, and now the Roux Institute, Portland can offer an unparalleled trajectory for people wanting the highest educational attainment.
We are also a gateway to education for so many who come to this country with little experience, or with experience that doesn’t transfer smoothly to the US system. We need to find ways to bolster language acquisition and speed up the process of translating credentials across borders. Our goal should be for Portland to be top of mind for anyone looking for a place with world-class education. Yes, this is a project for Portland Public Schools - but it is also a project for the City as a whole.
